Difference between Add Image and Add Media to Wordpress Blog?

If you are new to using Wordpress, you might confuse between adding an image and adding media or gallery to your wordpress page or post. There is a difference between these two features.

Add Image
The “Add Image” feature is quite straightforward as it places image in your page or post. If you are placing more than one image then they will align next to each other as shown below.

Unless you are using some CSS code or edit the stylesheet (style.css) to space them out otherwise they might not look as good as you wanted them to be.

Add Media
Now you may wish the picture can be displayed smaller or in thumbnail size and when click will display a bigger picture in detail. This is where the “Add Media” come in to help. Its purpose is to help you to space out the pictures evenly like a gallery and load faster on a page. Most importantly, you can achieve such effect without tweaking any CSS code.

How to Add a Gallery to Your Post/Page?
  1. If you already have imported pictures, click on the “Add Media” icon.
  2. A box will pop up, click on the “Gallery” tab on top.
  3. Then, click on the button “Insert Gallery” below to add in all the images.
  4. Once you have done that, a camera with a photo icon will appear if you are in the Visual mode while a word [gallery] will appear if you are in HTML mode.
  5. Now, click on the “Update” button on your right to save the changes.

You will see the pictures are much neater than before. The picture dimensions are automatically resized to fit into a thumbnail and it is spaced out evenly into 3 columns. You can indicate how many columns you want when you are inserting the gallery. For example, if you want the pictures to display in two columns.

Follow the below steps to change.

  1. Click on the camera with photo icon and you will see two icons appear on the top left hand corner.
  2. Click on “Edit Gallery” icon and it will bring back the pop-up box.
  3. Under the “Gallery Settings”, change the gallery columns from 3 to 2.
  4. Click on “Update gallery settings” to save.

You can continue experiencing the setting to get the layout you want.
