How to Make Parent Menu in Drop-down Menu Non Clickable?

If you have drop-down menu at your blog navigation bar, most likely you will want the parent menu to be non clickable. The parent menu serves only as a container to the children menus so it should not contain any link.

There are few ways to make the parent menu non clickable but may involve tweaking the wordpress code. However, it may not the most effective way as is involves too much effort. One simple way is to use the Wordpress plugin called “Page Links to”.

How it works
  1. If you are interested, click here to download the plugin.
  2. Install the plugin and activate it to use.
  3. Unlike other plugins, it does not have any setting added to the Wordpress left hand panel.
  4. The “Page Links to” setting is only found at the bottom of each page or post.
  5. So now if you want to make the parent menu non clickable, go the parent page and scroll down to the page to locate “Page Links to” section.
  6. Under the “Point to this URL:”, add in “#” sign and when it is clicked, it will not go anywhere.
  7. Scroll up the page and click on “Update” to save the setting.
You can check now your parent navigation menu is not clickable. This simple plugin will save you countless of hours so don't forget to email a special thanks to the plugin developer - Mark Jaquith.

No Plugin is Needed if You are Using Wordpress Menus
Some of you might be using Wordpress Menus for your navigation. If this is the case then you will not need the above plugin as it already has an option which allows you to do it easily.

  1. In your Wordpress dashboard, go to Appearance > Menus
  2. At "Custom Links", enter # at URL.
  3. At "Label", enter, for example, "Products" to make this main item as non-clickable.
  4. Click "Add to Menu"
  5. Then you drag all those items belong to “Product” below the newly-added "Products".
  6. Delete the old "Products" and then click "Save Menu" to finish.
  7. Repeat steps 2 to 6 for the rest of your menu items that you want them to be non-clickable.

Now, you can check and click on your main menu categories, they should be non clickable and will not go to any pages.
